A n Interview with Stephanie Steiner, MSN, ACNP-C, CPNP-AC, CFRN WHILE PRACTICING emergency nursing in tertiary care/trauma centers, Stephanie Steiner, MSN, AC- N P-C, CPNP-AC, CFRN, often found herself working w ith critical care transport services personnel, and she became inspired by what they could accom- plish. She pursued further education to become a flight acute care nurse practitioner herself, and has dedicated herself to this important and never-dull p ractice for the past 8 years. Recently, Ms. Steiner also became the Director of the Dorothy Ebersbach Academic Center for Flight Nursing at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, where she directs the Flight Nursing Summer Camp, an annual educational ses- sion that is part of the Acute Care Nurse Practition- er Flight Nursing program. How did you become interested in Flight Nursing/Critical Care Transport? Nursing is very multifaceted. There are so many specialties in nursing. You can be practicing for 2 years in an emergency department (ED) and if you b ecome restless with that, you can try a different specialty. That's how many flight nurses started; most of us have a solid back- ground in emergency nursing and critical care. Most of my experience was in emergency nursing—in busy tertiary care/trauma centers—where you get ex- posed to lots of different critical care transport programs on a regular basis. She is a family nurse practitioner in the Pri- mary Care Clinic at Fox Army Health Center in Huntsville, AL, a clinic that cares f or active duty and retired military members and their families. Dr. Cooke's greatest passion is caring for mili- t ary families. This is reflected in her work as AANP's Representative to the White House for J oining Forces, an initiative that is designed to meet the unique health needs of service mem- bers, veterans, and their families. Dr. Cooke works directly with the Office of the First Lady on Join- ing Forces on an array of veteran-specific pro- g rams and activities (see "Joining Forces to Support Military Families"). Among clinicians, NPs have taken a leading role in Joining Forces. Do you agree? The AANP is an active part of a collaborative effort with the White House's Joining Forces initiative. NPs are in a key position to care for our military, veterans, and their families as health care providers since we are educated to care for patients and f amilies as a whole. We are leaders in a way that NPs are always looking for better ways to care for the patients we serve. There are many members of the military back in their communities. The care they need is being delivered by civilian providers like NPs. We must be sure that the care they receive is as excellent as the service t hey have provided to our nation. Before win- ning that seat in the state legislature, Ms. Adcock was the first NP elected to the Cary, North Caroli- na, town council. Cary is a town of 150,000 known for its superb quality of life and is on many "Best Of " lists for being a great place to live and work. She was reelected in 2011 for another 4-year term on the town council. Following her reelection, the other members of the council elected her Mayor Pro Tem, so she is in her third year as the first NP to be Mayor Pro Tem in Cary. Ms. Adcock is also the first NP to hold the posi- tion of Chief Health Officer at a major US corpora- tion. Ms. Adcock has held that position for over 20 years at SAS Institute, Inc., the world's largest pri- vately held software company, where she over- sees a staff of 58 health care providers—including physicians, NPs, lab technicians, pharmacists, psychologists, and nutritionists—who serve the company's 5400 Cary, NC, headquarters employees and their families with com- prehensive primary care health services at the on-site health center. Twenty years ago when SAS decided to transition from an on-site urgent-care health center to one that provided free comprehensive primary care for all em- ployees and their families, it was a pioneering step. There were no models of how to run such a program. Ms. Adcock not only worked with an architect to help design the building renovations, she also helped create the primary care health center from the ground up, day-by-day, decision by decision.
