NP Firsts
Making a Difference in the Lives of the
Vulnerable and Underserved
An Interview with
Joanne M. Pohl, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP
JOANNE M. POHL , PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, has
more than 30 years of experience as a nurse practi-
tioner. She directed the Adult Nurse Practitioner
Program at the University of Michigan School of
Nursing from 1992 to 2001, and served as Associate
Dean, Office for Community Partnerships, from
2001 to 2008. Dr. Pohl's scholarship has focused on
health outcomes, informatics in safety net practices,
and cost of care in nurse managed health centers
(NMHCs), community-based primary care health-
care services under the leadership of an advanced
practice nurse. NMHCs are health centers (usually
not-for-profit) that emphasize health education,
health promotion, and disease prevention, and
their target population is usually the underserved.
She is a past president of the National Organiza-
tion of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and is
actively involved in policy related to primary care and NPs. Dr. Pohl has been in-
volved in the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project and cur-
rently serves on the Advisory Board for the Nursing Alliance for Quality Care.
A central focus of Dr. Pohl's life has been to make a difference in the lives of
others, especially those who are vulnerable and underserved. "Loretta Ford has
used this quote, and it really fits who I am so she sent it to me," says Dr. Pohl.
" 'Be ashamed to die if you haven't done something for humanity.' "
Tell us a bit about your "firsts."
One of my greatest firsts was to be the first recipient of the Loretta C. Ford Award
