Counseling Counseling should be at the forefront of your recommended treatment plan for depression in older adults. The effectiveness of counseling in the treatment of mild to moderate depression has been shown to be equivalent to the effectiveness of medication, 5 and the effects of counseling can be longer lasting than those of antidepressant medication alone.
