Fitzgerald, DNP, FNP-BC, NP-C, FAANP, CSP, FAAN, DCC Every year at this time, thousands of students complete their NP studies and embark on a new career. This article is dedicated to the NP Class of 2014. Best wishes for suc- cess and welcome to the profession! A n oft-quoted rule of job hunting is that the more competitive the employ- ment market and the more responsible the position, the more you need to prepare for the job search. With a wider variety of practice opportunities and in- creased responsibility for NPs, new NPs seeking a job must be well-prepared to find or create the right position. In addition, NPs need to develop sophisticated negotiation skills to maximize the compensation for their new position, as well as effectively leverage the clinical experience many NPs bring to the workplace. Few NPs, whether they are new to practice or are long-time clinicians, feel ade- quately prepared to take on the task of high-level employment negotiation. The following information has been developed to help NPs with this important pro- fessional journey. Before embarking on this next stage of your professional journey, set time aside for reflection. Pohl, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP JOANNE M. POHL, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, has more than 30 years of experience as a nurse practi- tioner. She directed the Adult Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Michigan School of Nursing from 1992 to 2001, and served as Associate Dean, Office for Community Partnerships, from 2001 to 2008. NMHCs are health centers (usually not-for-profit) that emphasize health education, health promotion, and disease prevention, and their target population is usually the underserved. She is a past president of the National Organiza- tion of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and is actively involved in policy related to primary care and NPs. Dr. Pohl has been in- volved in the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project and cur- rently serves on the Advisory Board for the Nursing Alliance for Quality Care. "Loretta Ford has used this quote, and it really fits who I am so she sent it to me," says Dr. Pohl. " 'Be ashamed to die if you haven't done something for humanity.' An Interview with Stephanie Steiner, MSN, ACNP-C, CPNP-AC, CFRN WHILE PRACTICING emergency nursing in tertiary care/trauma centers, Stephanie Steiner, MSN, AC- NP-C, CPNP-AC, CFRN, often found herself working with critical care transport services personnel, and she became inspired by what they could accom- plish. She pursued further education to become a flight acute care nurse practitioner herself, and has dedicated herself to this important and never-dull practice for the past 8 years. Recently, Ms. Steiner also became the Director of the Dorothy Ebersbach Academic Center for Flight Nursing at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, where she directs the Flight Nursing Summer Camp, an annual educational ses- sion that is part of the Acute Care Nurse Practition- er Flight Nursing program. How did you become interested in Flight Nursing/Critical Care Transport? Nursing is very multifaceted. There are so many specialties in nursing. You can be practicing for 2 years in an emergency department (ED) and if you become restless with that, you can try a different specialty. That's how many flight nurses started; most of us have a solid back- ground in emergency nursing and critical care. Most of my experience was in emergency nursing—in busy tertiary care/trauma centers—where you get ex- posed to lots of different critical care transport programs on a regular basis.
