F itzgerald Health Education Associates fhea.com Certification Q&A; Developing a Study Plan for the NP C ertification Exam Margaret A. Fitzgerald, DNP, FNP-BC, NP-C, FAANP, CSP, FAAN, DCC A s a newly prepared nurse practitioner, you are to be congratulated on your success to date. After completing a rigorous graduate program, your days of study are not yet over but continue with a new focus. You need to continue to develop, expand, and refine your NP knowledge base to assure success with certification. But how do you do this? Here is advice I provide in response to c ommonly asked questions about preparing for the certification exam. I n preparing for the NP certification exam, where should I start? Start with reviewing the information on the exam content. Make a list of the ar- eas where you feel your knowledge base is secure and where just reviewing material to refresh your memory will likely suffice. Make a second list where you identify areas of weak- ness and topics where you n eed to concentrate your re- v iew. If you have taken an NP review course, you are likely aware that the con- t ent of certain parts of the p rogram was truly review, w hereas other sections re- vealed areas where you n eed to expand your knowl- edge base. Knowing what areas you need to focus on helps you decide how to al- l ocate your study time. 1 Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. 978•794•8366 Volume 13, Issue 12, December 2013 continued on page 3... F itzgerald Health Education Associates fhea.com NP Firsts I nnovating, Educating, and Mentoring in the Field of Dermatology An Interview with Mary E. Nolen, ANP-BC, DCNP COLLEAGUES USED TO ASK Mary Nolen if she could be cloned so that there would be more than one of her around to handle all that she has done in the dermatology departments where she has practiced in the past. Since she couldn't really clone herself, Ms. Nolen did the next best thing: she started the f irst Nurse Practitioner Fellowship program in der- matology, which is now 10 years old. The Fellow- ship program has graduated 20 NPs to date, helping to meet the needs of the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and other communities for der- m atology services. Mary Nolen began her career at a time when there were few NP programs in general and none for specialty practice, so she had to move ahead w ithout clinical mentors, learning by doing, asking, w atching, and taking every opportunity offered to her and running with it. " Things took off," she says, but in those simple words there is a lifetime of hard work, vision, and just plain moxie, that eventually brought Ms. Nolen to where she is today, educating and mentoring a whole n ew generation of NPs. Tell us about your "Firsts." The Nurse Practitioner Fellowship in Dermatology at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is the first NP fellowship in dermatology. This program began in 2003 a nd has graduated 20 fellows so far. In 2014 the program is going from a 1-year program to 2 years. Each year the program accepts two certified NPs with several years of clinical experience in a general healthcare setting. Donaldson, NP-C, MS, FNP-BC ROBERT (BOB) DONALDSON IS A LEADER. When there's something that needs to be done, he can't imagine not doing it. If there is not yet a structure in which to d o what needs to be done, he will create the struc- ture, and he knows how to find others to help him do what needs to be done. "I have just always want- ed to be a leader, I don't know any other way to be," he says. M r. Donaldson has a list of "firsts," culminating in becoming the first NP to become Clinical Director of a Department of Emergency Medicine (Ellenville Re- gional Hospital, Ellenville, NY ) in 2008—a first in New York State and the nation, and he was also the first NP elected president of the medical staff (also Ellenville Regional Hospital) in 2010—a position tra- ditionally held only by physicians—a first in New York State and the nation. "Before this, to our knowl- e dge, there was no record of either 'First' being done before," he explains. Besides his prime mission of caring for people, one of Mr. Donaldson's goals is to spread the word and educate people about what great leaders NPs are in hospital and emergency medicine. He speaks at healthcare meetings around the c ountry, telling his own story as a way to increase public and professional awareness of the potential NPs have to play a larger role in emergency medicine and hospital administration. Tell us about your "firsts." I like to say that the first "first" is that, like all NPs in emergency medicine, I had t o create my own educational program in emergency medicine because NPs 1 Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. 978•794•8366 Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2014 Robert D. Pace, PhD, FNP-BC, NCMP, FAANP "IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE, ASK A BUSY PERSON." F or over 40 years, Dr. Diane Pace has been the person to ask, and is the first NP to serve as president of the N orth American Menopause Society (NAMS), the pre- mier organization dedicated to the health and quality o f life of all women during midlife and beyond. She has been a member of NAMS since 1996, and has served on many NAMS committees as well as on the Board of Trustees since 2008, including terms as Treasurer and President-elect. D r. Pace was the first and only NP asked to work on the joint NAMS-APGO (Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics) curriculum, a collabora- tive effort to develop a curriculum for medical resi- dents. This curriculum will be available for other clinicians in the near future. And she does all this while she is Clinical Associate Professor at the Univer- sity of Memphis Loewenberg School of Nursing and maintains a private clinical practice providing women's health and primary care at the Methodist Teaching Practice in Memphis. D r. Pace is a leader among NPs in health care informatics and electronic med- ical records. She was involved with the Tennessee eHealth initiatives and has served on a state board and on committees helping to create a statewide health information exchange. Dr. Pace was appointed by the governor of Tennessee and was the only nurse practitioner on this state committee. She participated in the d evelopment of the MidSouth eHealth Alliance in Memphis, which helped trans- fer healthcare information electronically across regional hospitals and ambulatory 1 F itzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. 9 78 •7 94 •8 366 Volume 14, Issue 3, March 2014 Diane T. DerKazarian, ANP-BC, MSN, RN JENNIFER DERKAZARIAN , ANP-BC, MSN, RN, readily ad- mits that deep frustration with the status quo she was experiencing as an NP is what spurred her on to become the first NP Director of Advanced Practice Nursing at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts. Her frustration with the lack of leadership struc- ture for NPs led Ms. DerKazarian to blaze her own trail in order to answer what she terms her "burning question," namely, why was there a lack of infrastruc- ture for NPs within the Lahey administrative struc- ture? She decided to pursue a DNP in executive administration at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (MGH IHP), and ex- pects to graduate in May 2014. However, in 2012, while still pursuing her DNP and working per diem as an NP, she was presented with the opportunity to ap- ply for a newly created position as Director of Advanced Practice Nursing at Lahey. Ms. DerKazarian was chosen as the first NP to assume this role at Lahey, and she continues to develop and innovate leadership structure for all APNs at Lahey. Tell us a bit about your "firsts." Becoming the first NP Director of Advanced Practice Nursing came about as a par- allel process occurring in my personal life and that of the Lahey organization. When the role was created and posted in 2012, I was working on my DNP and was working per diem at Lahey as an NP in cardiac electrophysiology. I've been with Lahey about 12 years. I graduated from MGH IHP with my ANP in August 1999. 1 Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. 978•794•8366 Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2014 Jennifer H.
