Providing Culturally Competent Care To provide culturally competent care to Asian pa- tients, clinicians must recognize culture-related bar- riers to health care and takes steps to overcome them. Most important, they must take steps to com- municate clearly with patients about health issues. However, when treating individual patients, it is im- portant to avoid making assumptions about a per- son's beliefs and practices based on ethnicity or per- ceived level of acculturation.
