not mean better patient reviews. Patients' satisfac- tion scores improved only modestly based on the newly remodeled hospital design. The move was as- sociated with improved room- and visitor-related satisfaction but no significant improvement in satis- faction with clinical providers or ancillary staff. Pa- tient opinions about their actual care, such as com- munication skills of providers, did not rise any higher in the new tower than in the older building. The researchers noted that patients responded positively to pleasing surroundings and comfort, but were able to discriminate their experiences with the hospital environment from those with providers. The move to a new building had significant impact on only one of the four measures of overall patient satisfaction, the study concluded, because clinical care is likely to be the most important determinant of this outcome. "Hospital administrators should not use outdated facilities as an excuse for suboptimal provider satis- faction scores," Dr. Siddiqui suggested. He also not- ed that additional research should focus on evaluat- ing satisfaction results from hospitals that have completed patient safety and provider satisfaction initiatives. This includes design features that im- prove safety, work flow, efficiency, productivity, and stress. • Sources Johns Hopkins Medicine News.
