Avoiding Malpractice: A Case Analysis Collaborating Physicians and Duty of Care to NPs' Patients C arolyn Buppert, JD A recent court case held that a collaborating physician had a duty of care to the patient of a nurse practitioner, even though the physician never saw or evaluated the patient. Case A male patient consulted an NP who owned her own practice in Indiana. The NP treated the man, prescribing acetaminophen/hy- drocodone (Lortab), methadone, bupropion ( Wellbutrin), lithium, a nd alprazolam (Xanax).
