F itzgerald Health Education Associates fhea.com NP Firsts Committed to Women's Health in M idlife and Beyond An Interview with Diane T. Pace, PhD, FNP-BC, NCMP, FAANP "IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE, ASK A BUSY PERSON." For over 40 years, Dr. Diane Pace has been the person to ask, and is the first NP to serve as president of the N orth American Menopause Society (NAMS), the pre- m ier organization dedicated to the health and quality o f life of all women during midlife and beyond. She has been a member of NAMS since 1996, and has served on many NAMS committees as well as on the Board of Trustees since 2008, including terms as Treasurer and President-elect. Dr. Pace was the first and only NP asked to work on the joint NAMS-APGO (Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics) curriculum, a collabora- t ive effort to develop a curriculum for medical resi- d ents. This curriculum will be available for other clinicians in the near future. And she does all this while she is Clinical Associate Professor at the Univer- sity of Memphis Loewenberg School of Nursing and maintains a private clinical practice providing women's health and primary care at the Methodist Teaching Practice in Memphis. Dr. Pace is a leader among NPs in health care informatics and electronic med- i cal records. She was involved with the Tennessee eHealth initiatives and has served on a state board and on committees helping to create a statewide health information exchange. Dr. Pace was appointed by the governor of Tennessee and was the only nurse practitioner on this state committee. She participated in the development of the MidSouth eHealth Alliance in Memphis, which helped trans- fer healthcare information electronically across regional hospitals and ambulatory 1 Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. 978•794•8366 Volume 14, Issue 3, March 2014 Diane T. DerKazarian, ANP-BC, MSN, RN JENNIFER DERKAZARIAN , ANP-BC, MSN, RN, readily ad- mits that deep frustration with the status quo she was experiencing as an NP is what spurred her on to become the first NP Director of Advanced Practice N ursing at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts. Her frustration with the lack of leadership struc- ture for NPs led Ms. DerKazarian to blaze her own trail in order to answer what she terms her "burning q uestion," namely, why was there a lack of infrastruc- ture for NPs within the Lahey administrative struc- ture? She decided to pursue a DNP in executive administration at the Massachusetts General Hospital I nstitute of Health Professions (MGH IHP), and ex- p ects to graduate in May 2014. However, in 2012, while still pursuing her DNP and working per diem as an NP, she was presented with the opportunity to ap- ply for a newly created position as Director of Advanced Practice Nursing at Lahey. M s. DerKazarian was chosen as the first NP to assume this role at Lahey, and she continues to develop and innovate leadership structure for all APNs at Lahey. Tell us a bit about your "firsts." Becoming the first NP Director of Advanced Practice Nursing came about as a par- a llel process occurring in my personal life and that of the Lahey organization. When the role was created and posted in 2012, I was working on my DNP and was working per diem at Lahey as an NP in cardiac electrophysiology. I've been with Lahey about 12 years. I graduated from MGH IHP with my ANP in August 1999. 1 Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. 978•794•8366 Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2014 Jennifer H. Fitzgerald, DNP, FNP-BC, NP-C, FAANP, CSP, FAAN, DCC Every year at this time, thousands of students complete their NP studies and embark on a new career. This article is dedicated to the NP Class of 2014. Best wishes for suc- c ess and welcome to the profession! A n oft-quoted rule of job hunting is that the more competitive the employ- ment market and the more responsible the position, the more you need to prepare for the job search. With a wider variety of practice opportunities and in- c reased responsibility for NPs, new NPs seeking a job must be well-prepared to f ind or create the right position. In addition, NPs need to develop sophisticated negotiation skills to maximize the compensation for their new position, as well as effectively leverage the clinical experience many NPs bring to the workplace. Few NPs, whether they are new to practice or are long-time clinicians, feel ade- quately prepared to take on the task of high-level employment negotiation. The f ollowing information has been developed to help NPs with this important pro- fessional journey. Before embarking on this next stage of your professional journey, set time aside for reflection. Pohl, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP JOANNE M . P OHL , PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, has more than 30 years of experience as a nurse practi- tioner. She directed the Adult Nurse Practitioner P rogram at the University of Michigan School of Nursing from 1992 to 2001, and served as Associate D ean, Office for Community Partnerships, from 2001 to 2008. Dr. Pohl's scholarship has focused on health outcomes, informatics in safety net practices, and cost of care in nurse managed health centers (NMHCs), community-based primary care health- c are services under the leadership of an advanced practice nurse. NMHCs are health centers (usually not-for-profit) that emphasize health education, health promotion, and disease prevention, and their target population is usually the underserved. She is a past president of the National Organiza- tion of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and is actively involved in policy related to primary care and NPs. Dr. Pohl has been in- volved in the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project and cur- rently serves on the Advisory Board for the Nursing Alliance for Quality Care. A central focus of Dr. Pohl's life has been to make a difference in the lives of others, especially those who are vulnerable and underserved. "Loretta Ford has used this quote, and it really fits who I am so she sent it to me," says Dr. Pohl. " 'Be ashamed to die if you haven't done something for humanity.'
